SEA Games Opening Ceremony 19th August 2017
The 2017 Southeast Asian Games officially opened Saturday night (19th August) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The biennial SEA Games are the region's biggest and most important multi-sport event.
The 2017 SEA Games will feature 11 nations competing in 38 sports and 404 events.
Several sports will be making their SEA Games debut including bridge, cricket and in a unique first for Southeast Asia, the winter sports of ice hockey, figure skating and short-track speed skating.
Top names to watch include Rio Olympic 100-meter butterfly champion Joseph Schooling of Singapore, 2017 world champion keirin cyclist Azizulhasni Awang of Malaysia and Olympic air pistol champion Hoang Xuan Vinh of Vietnam, who won his country's first-ever Olympic gold medal in Rio.
Royalty will also be represented with Thai princess Sirivannavari Nariratana competing in the equestrian event.
Malaysia will be looking for a home boost to put them at the top of the medals table, but the favourites again will be Thailand, the SEA Games most-decorated nation.
Since its inception in 1959 as the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in 1959, Malaysia has hosted the event six times in 1965, 1971, 1977 and 1989, 2001 and now 2017
After the traditional parade of nations, the 2017 SEA Games were officially opened by the current royal head of the Malaysian federation Sultan Muhammad V.
Following a series of performances featuring Malaysia's multi-cultural history, the SEA Games torch arrived and the cauldron was lit by Malaysia's 2014 Commonwealth Games diving bronze medalist Nur Dhabitah Sabrias, who was lifted into the air to ignite the flame.
The 2017 SEA Games will end on August 30th.
